Fleetwood is a popular seaside resort and houses a traditional pier, a beautiful marina for yachts and a busy promenade. Fleetwood is also known for being home to the world famous "Fisherman's Friend" lozenges. It has the only original main street tramway in Britain and Fleetwood’s lighthouse was built in the middle of the road!
Fleetwood History. Sir Peter Hesketh, who masterminded a plan to build a seaport and holiday resort on the land he owned, founded Fleetwood in 19th century. Fleetwood eventually developed into a seaport of some importance and became a busy centre of the fishing industry, but became popular as a holiday resort in the late 1900’s. Sir Peter Hesketh and Lady Fleetwood opened the Fleetwood market in 1840. The discussions of building the pier seem to have started in 1890’s, but it was opened to the public only in 1911. In 1952 the Fleetwood pier went up in flames. It was the biggest fire in Fleetwood’s history and the flames could be seen for 20 miles. The repairs were not completed until 1958. The Marine Hall, gardens, Bowling Green, boating lake and golf course all date back to the 1920s and 30s.
Fleetwood Attractions. Fleetwood offers various attractions including a traditional market and a range of local festivals and events. There are four miles of beaches and seafront gardens with the Lake District Mountains as a backdrop. Fleetwood Museum, based close to the quayside and overlooking Morecambe Bay, features the story of Fleetwood and its fishing heritage. The newly refurbished Pier and amusement arcade offer regular live entertainment at Marine Gardens and the Farmer Parr’s Animal World, a family run rare breeds farm in Fleetwood, houses the Country Life Heritage Museum. The Marine Hall in Fleetwood is a premier entertainment venue, hosting a variety of shows, concerts and festivals. It is a large, attractive 1930's building, standing grandly in its own stunning gardens. The Marine Gardens has a full range of outdoor fun facilities, including pitch and putt, crazy golf, children’s play areas and lots of live entertainment on throughout the summer.
Fleetwood hosts a large purpose built Model Yachting Lake on Fleetwood Esplanade that is very popular with both locals and the tourists. The Mount Craft Centre overlooks Fleetwood Marine Hall and Gardens and has an interesting collection of arts and crafts goods for sale. It houses a historic clock, maintained by the Fleetwood Civic Society, and, on a clear day it is possible to see right across to the Lake District.
A variety of ships and leisure craft sail in and out of the Fleetwood harbour daily and visitors can even send boxed kippers home as a tasty reminder of their stay in Fleetwood.
Fleetwood Leisure Centre has a swimming pool and fitness facilities while an 18-hole golf course and a tenpin bowling alley are also available in Fleetwood.
Fleetwood Shopping and Dinning. Fleetwood has a huge traditional market with over 250 stalls and a history stretching over 160 years. It also has a newly built modern Freeport Shopping and Leisure Village Complex, offering over 40 high street and designer shops at discounted rates. Fleetwood offers a great choice for dining out: from restaurants offering international cuisine of the highest standard to the old fashioned fish ‘n’ chips or fabulous farmhouse home made cream teas.
Fleetwood Access. Exit M55 J3 and follow A585 to Fleetwood, which is 9 miles away. Follow signs for Town Centre/Docks and then Ferries. The ferry port is off Dock Street.
